Scallions growing back the green?

i seen on next food network star that if you cut off the white part of the scallions and put it in a cup of water, it will grow back into a full green scallion. i tried this. yesterday i put the white into water. About how long until i have another scallion or is this false.

it will probably take a a few days at least never done it personally with scallions but you can do that with most roots
a week or so at least. You can do it with the root end of any onion to get lovely green tops to use.
