Scallions growing on my lawn?

I noticed some weird looking curly grass on my lawn this weekend and when I pulled it up they smelled like onions! I have random little patches all over the lawn. Is this usual for the Long Island area? Can these scallions be eatten?

I’m pretty sure you can. This being said, if your lawn if treated with any pesticides, you may want to think twice about it. Organic onions aren’t that expensive.

Maybe they’re chives? It’s not very usual, but if a neighbor was growing them, seeds could easily have made it on to your lawn.

Yes, edible (use scissors to cut them up for garnish on baked potatoes or in soup) but like above said, do take care to wash them really well, and don’t eat them if you spray your lawn.

Yes, they are wild onions. I have them everywhere in the spring. I eat them.
