When to harvest onions and their stems?

I planted regular white onion sets about 6 weeks ago. When will they be ready to harvest?

Also, are the stems scallions? Can I cut them before the onion is ready? The stems are flopping over a little.
Thanks.

I selectively cut off the damaged (the ones flopping over) green stems to chop up on salads. Onions are meant to be harvested in the fall after all the green tops have wilted. But, you can pull the whole thing up now and chop it up on a salad. The head of the onion will be really really small (hardly wider than the bottom of the stem), but it’s tasty on a salad.

I have a neighbor who says to clip off the tippy-top of stems that get the small growth atop them later in the summer.
