I like to use local produce whenever possible. Most of the items at our local green market are high quality but the scallions are not as nice as the ones at the supermarket– is this because scallions don’t grow well locally (In New York) ?
Where do most scallions come from?
I am pretty sure they grow just about everywhere, if cared for properly. Here is some info on scallions that you might find helpful:
Most varieties of onions need to grow their tops in cool weather and to form their bulbs in warmer weather. Onions are very sensitive to daylight and so they are divided into short- and long-day varieties. The former need at least about 12 hours of sunlight in early summer and the latter, approximately 15 hours. The amount of light controls the formation of bulbs. Onions are also voraciously hungry; they need manure and fertilizer prior to planting.
ALSO, some varieties recommended for New York include:
From transplants (Not for long term storage):
Ailsa Craig
Bennie’s Red
Candy
Red Sweet Spanish
Walla Walla (mild)
White Sweet Spanish
From seed (early-maturing):
Arsenal

Hope this helped a little.
