Where to find cooking ingredients?

December 16, 2009 by

I’m not a cook at all. I’m about to be on my own and I bought this vegetarian cook book a while back. Will your average wal-mart or supermarket have most of the stuff in it? I mean it’s got stuff I’ve never heard of all through it like
cumin seeds
ghee
besan
cayenne pepper
turmeric
coriander
garam masala
baby leeks
garbanzo beans
shallots
phyllo pastry
scallions
lovage
chervil
ricotta cheese
vegetarian gelozone
mango chutney
cannellini beans
marinated tofu
saffron strands
bulghur wheat

There’s probably a lot more. That was just from flipping from a few pages.

A grocery store will have most of those items. A few of them you might have to go to a natural food store to acquire.

A lot of those things you will be able to pick up at a grocery store.
Out of all the big-chain grocery stores I’ve visited, Kroger has the best selection when it comes to vegetarian/vegan products.
If not, check out Whole Foods or a store similar to it!

cumin seeds …spice section ofgrocery store
ghee…….clarified butter, you can make this yourself. Slow
melt your butter and remove all solids and
    impurities.
besan…..also known as gram flour, NOT graham flour. Seek
    in an Indian Grocery
cayenne pepper…..spice section of grocery store
    turmeric…..spice section ofgrocery store
    coriander….spice section of grocery store
garam masala…ground spices common in Indian food. Seek
    in Indian Grocery
baby leeks….produce section in nicer grocery store
garbanzo beans….grocery store, ethnic section (Mexican in
    mine)
    shallots……..produce section in grocery store
phyllo pastry….freezer section in grocery store; with pie
    dough
    scallions….produce section in grocery store
lovage… this is most often found in Southern European food.
It is a cousin to celery. I have no idea where you can
find this here. My friend bought plants and seeds
    over ebay.
    chervil….spice section in grocery
    ricotta cheese…dairy section in grocery
vegetarian gelozone…this is a vegetarian gelling agent. Try a
natrual foods store. Whole Foods might have.
mango chutney…I have to go to the condiments and salsa
section of a nicer grocery to get mine. HEB here.
    cannellini beans….grocery store
marinated tofu….nicer grocery store or sometime natural food
    store
saffron strands……spice section of nicer grocery store
bulghur wheat….nicer grocery or natural foods store

Enjoy your cooking adventure. You can do it.

yep your regular supermarket will keep pretty much all of those well in the UK we have asda rather than walmart in the UK and they do. For the products you can’t find on your list try a health food shop or if you have an Asian/Indian specialty shops they are your best bet.
